Jaws Big Wave Championships given green light for Thursday

The Maui News

The World Surf League issued a green alert Tuesday for the cbdMD Jaws Big Wave Championships, with the event set to run Thursday at Peahi.

With the announcement, the world’s best big wave surfers will be making their way to Maui in anticipation of competing in surf in the 35-to-50-foot range on the face. Among those entered into the 24-surfer men’s division are Maui’s Billy Kemper — a three-time winner of the event as well as the defending champion — Kai Lenny, Albee Layer, Tyler Larronde and Ian Walsh. Among the 10 women set to compete are two-time winner Paige Alms and Andrea Moller of Maui, and defending champion Keala Kennelly of Kauai.

“Surf size is expected to be in the 35-45 (foot) range on the face through the morning hours, with the bigger sets to 50 (feet),” Surfline’s forecast in a WSL press release stated.
