Rainbow Wahine get big win over Texas

Amy Atwell drained six 3-pointers and finished with 24 points to lead four Rainbow Wahine in double-digit scoring, and the University of Hawaii women’s basketball team beat Texas 73-60 on Sunday at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.

Jadynn Alexander chipped in 17 points, Julissa Tago scored 12 and Nae Nae Calhoun added 11 for UH (4-4), which was coming off a 68-59 loss to No. 12 N.C. State on Saturday in the Rainbow Wahine Showdown.

Against the Longhorns (4-4), the Rainbow Wahine were on fire from distance, making 10 of 19 shots from behind the arc.

UH held a slim 31-30 lead at the half, and Texas grabbed a 48-45 advantage after the third quarter. The ‘Bows started the final quarter on a 15-3 run — capped by Atwell’s final 3 with 3:13 remaining — to take control before closing it out from the free-throw line, where Hawaii went 21 for 24 in the game.

Charli Collier had 18 points and Joyner Holmes added 17 for the Longhorns.

UH next plays at No. 7 Oregon State on Friday.
