Young places fourth at Vans World Cup

Maui’s Cody Young competes during the fourth round of the Vans World Cup of Surfing on Monday at Sunset Beach on Oahu’s North Shore. Young won the heat with a score of 11.53 that included a ride of 8.00. He then finished second in his quarterfinal and semifinal heats to reach the final. There, Young (8.70) placed fourth behind winner Jack Robinson (19.07) of Australia, Oahu’s Ezekiel Lau (12.06) and Australia’s Ethan Ewing (11.10). Still, it was the best finish for Young in a World Surf League Qualifying Series 10,000 event — earlier this year, he won the Sunset Open, a QS 1,000 event. Fellow Maui surfer Ian Gentil was eliminated in the quarterfinals Monday.
