The Seabury Hall boys soccer team advanced to the semifinals of The Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Division II State Championship with a 5-1 victory over fourth-seeded Aiea on Thursday afternoon at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex on Oahu.
In a Division I quarterfinal, Maui Interscholastic League champion King Kekaulike lost to Kalani 4-0.
Seabury, the only MIL D-II team this season, got a goal from Oliver Emde in the 15th minute, and Kai Merrill scored in the 23rd to give the Spartans an early 2-0 lead in their quarterfinal. Aiea (6-7-1), champion of the Oahu Interscholastic Association, got on the board in the final minute of the first half with Kelly Takara’s goal.
But the Spartans (2-9-0) quickly got back their two-goal advantage when Thomas Lee scored in the 44th minute. Duke Romanchak put the game away with goals in the 72nd and 80th minutes.
Seabury will face defending state champion Kapaa (9-0-2) in a 3 p.m. semifinal today. The Spartans are in the state final four for the first time since back-to-back appearances in 2009 and 2010.
King Kekaulike (8-2-1) dropped into the consolation bracket after its loss to the OIA runner-up Falcons (13-2-1).
Travis Brubaker (23rd minute) and Kanta Oka (28th minute) scored in the first half for Kalani. Oka added another goal in the 46th minute, and Makahekili Monaghan capped the scoring for the Falcons in the 64th minute.
King Kekaulike will play Kaiser in a fifth-place semifinal today at 3 p.m.
