The Pailolo Challenge, which had been scheduled for Sept. 19, has been canceled.

Race host Hawaiian Canoe Club announced the decision to call off the annual long-distance outrigger canoe race on Tuesday.

The decision comes four days after the Na Wahine O Ke Kai and Molokai Hoe long-distance world championship races were canceled. The Maui County Hawaiian Canoe Association called off its summer regatta season last month, in line with other associations.

“Hawaiian Canoe Club has been actively monitoring the COVID19 situation,” the club said in a press release. “The health and safety of the community, paddlers and volunteers is the main priority when considering the possibilities of hosting this annual event. With the uncertainty of the paddling seasons across the State, the decision to cancel the Pailolo Challenge was not made lightly.”

The Pailolo Challenge is a 26-mile race from D.T. Fleming Beach Park in Kapalua to Kaunakakai.
