Monteleone runs well at Arizona invitational

Lahainaluna High School track and field coach and masters competitor Cynthia Monteleone was invited to compete in her first track meet since March at the

Desert Dream Last Hurrah Invitational in San Tan Valley, Ariz., last weekend.

Temperatures reached 100 degrees, but she was able to run a 26.88-second time in the 200 meters on Friday night, throw a 7.70-meter shot put (26 feet, 3 inches) on Saturday, followed an hour later by a 59.07-second time in the 400 meters.

“This meet was well run and a great example of how we can return safely to the sport of track and field,” Monteleone said in an email to The Maui News.

Monteleone, 44, said her 200-meter time currently places her third this year among Americans and fourth in the world time in the 40-44 masters age group. She said her 400 time is tops among Americans and second best world time in her age group She missed the world lead by 0.1 seconds in the 400.
