Kawahara, Shimizu, Jonke win Maui titles

Payten Shimizu and Ava Kawahara of Wailuku each won age group girls titles in the HSJGA Match Play Tournament Benefiting The Hawaii Foodbank.

Shimizu won the girls 13-18 age group on Maui, while Kawahara was the Maui champion in the girls 7-12 division. Kihei’s Dillon Jonke won the boys 13-18 divission on Maui.

There were 120 junior golfers who participated from around the state in the first tournament of its kind administered by the HSJGA in light of the cancelation of many sports programs due to COVID-19. Each island — Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the Big Island — had its own Match Play bracket.

The event raised $6,500 for the Hawaii Food Bank.


Roman fires first career ace

Lahaina resident Gerry Roman scored her first hole-in-one on Aug. 5 on the 11th hole on the Kaanapali Kai Course. She used a 9-wood from 102 yards.

The shot was witnessed by Lyn Muegge, Lynda Kenney and Kathy Brooks.


Stack scores hole-in-one at PCC

Greg Stack, 67, of Lahaina fired a hole-in-one from 135 yards on the 14th hole at Pukalani Country Club on Tuesday.

He used a 7-iron on the shot that was witnessed by Ray Camacho, Maka Kwon and Chris Llanes.
