King Kekaulike High School graduate Colton Cowell had 13 kills and five aces to help lead the No. 2-ranked University of Hawaii men’s volleyball team to a season-opening, four-set victory over No. 8 UC Irvine on Sunday in Irvine, Calif.
Rado Parapunov also had 13 kills as the Rainbow Warriors rallied for the 22-25, 25-16, 25-13, 25-17 victory.
After dropping a close first set during which the Anteaters hit .520, UH quickly grabbed control in the second, jumping out to an 8-1 lead. That set the tone as the Rainbow Warriors only trailed for one point — at 3-2 in the fourth set — the rest of the match.
Hawaii outhit UC Irvine .402 to .228 in winning its season opener for the eighth straight year. Cowell hit .281 while taking a team-high 32 swings.
Joel Schneidmiller finished with 17 kills to lead the Anteaters, who were also playing their season opener.
The teams play again today before UH heads to UC San Diego for a pair of matches Wednesday and Thursday.
