No. 1 Rainbow Warriors get past No. 7 Beach in four sets
The Maui News
King Kekaulike High School graduate Colton Cowell had 14 kills and eight blocks to help the top-ranked University of Hawaii men’s volleyball team rally past No. 7 Long Beach State on Friday night at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu
Cowell also had five digs and an assist in the 23-25, 25-14, 25-13, 26-24 victory that upped the Rainbow Warriors’ record to 10-0 overall and 5-0 in Big West Conference play.
Rado Parapunov led UH with 17 kills, though he hit just .116. The star senior opposite got lots of help, however, from Cowell and Co. Chaz Galloway had 10 kills and Patrick Gasman had five kills and eight blocks as UH outblocked the Beach 15.5-7.0.
Hawaii appeared to be in control in the first set, taking a 19-14 lead after an LBSU service error. But the Beach scored the next five points to start an 11-4 run to end the frame.
The Rainbow Warriors responded by dominating the second and third sets, hitting at a .423 clip.
Long Beach State would not go quietly, though, and the fourth set remained close throughout. The Beach tied the game at 24 after an attack error by Parapunov, but UH closed out the match with a block by Galloway and Max Rosenfeld followed by a back-court kill by Parapunov.
Spencer Olivier led the Beach (3-2, 3-2) with 14 kills.
The teams play again today.
