University of Hawaii opposite Rado Parapunov was named the Big West Conference Player of the Year on Tuesday, the senior’s second consecutive POY honor.
Parapunov is just the second UH men’s volleyball player to win two conference POY awards, joining Costas Theocharidis, who was the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation POY in 2001 and ’03.
Parapunov led the Big West in kills (4.41 per set) and points (5.24), and ranked fifth in blocks (0.90), sixth in aces (0.32), seventh in hitting percentage (.340) and 12th in digs (1.56). He earned the conference’s player of the week award five times this season and a record 15 times in his career.
UC Santa Barbara’s Rick McLaughlin received the Coach of the Year award, and Long Beach State’s Clarke Godbold earned Freshman of the Year honors.
The top-seeded Rainbow Warriors are set to play in the NCAA tournament semifinals May 6 against either UCSB or Pepperdine.
