Baldwin grad Smith earns second-team All-America honors

Houston Baptist University senior Kaitlin Smith earned All-America second-team recognition last weekend at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.

Smith, a graduate of Baldwin High School, totaled 5,520 points to finish in 13th place in the women’s heptathlon after entering NCAAs ranked 22nd.

On the final day of the event Saturday, she leapt 19 feet in the long jump on her third attempt for 786 points. She added 535 points in the javelin with a throw of 108-6 and then closed the day with the 800-meter run, dropping a personal record time of 2 minutes, 15.19 seconds for 890 points.

On Friday, she earned 1,027 points in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.66 and 806 points in the high jump after clearing 5-1/4. Smith also posted two personal records in the shot put with a throw of 37-4 and in the 200 with a time of 25.34 seconds, collecting 620 and 856 points, respectively.

Smith, who graduated a semester early with a kinesiology degree and is starting to pursue a master’s, will get a fifth season of indoor and outdoor track due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
