Payton Akana gallops her horse to the line while posting a time of 21.97 seconds in junior barrel racing Friday afternoon during preliminary rounds of the Makawao Stampede at Oskie Rice Arena. The Stampede, a rebranding of the long-running Makawao Rodeo following the end of a partnership with the Maui Roping Club last year, kicked off its traditional Fourth of July weekend run after the event was canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event runs through Sunday.

SECOND PHOTO: Molokai’s Kahiwa Augustiro hangs on as the bull he is riding plows over a rodeo barrel with a clown inside it during Friday night’s Bull Bash. Augustiro was awarded a second ride due to the collision.

THIRD PHOTO: Ty Kauai ropes a steer while competing in double mugging with Dylan Aguiar on Friday.

FOURTH PHOTO: Oahu paniolo Benjamin Montero-Malunao posts a score of 74 points to win the Bull Bash.
