Maui’s Imaikalani deVault has officially qualified for the World Surf League’s 2022 Championship Tour, the WSL announced Saturday.

DeVault, 24, entered the season-ending Michelob Ultra Pure Gold Haleiwa Challenger at No. 4 in the Challenger Series, which awards 12 spots to the CT. While in a strong position to qualify, he still needed to wait and see after being eliminated in the round of 64 last week at Haleiwa.

Despite the early exit, deVault’s three top scores in the five-event Challenger Series — an equal-third finish at MEO Vissla Pro Ericeira, an equal-17th finish at the U.S. Open of Surfing and an equal-ninth finish at the 2020 Sydney Surf Pro — proved to be more than enough to guarantee him a top-12 finish in the Challenger Series following Saturday’s competition at Haleiwa.

DeVault becomes just the second Maui surfer to qualify for the CT — often referred to as the “Dream Tour” — and the first since Dusty Payne (2011-16).

“Dream come true! Thank you everyone for the support, kind messages and congratulations. Can’t wait to represent Maui on the dream tour! LET’S GO,” deVault wrote in an Instagram post Saturday, following it up with prayer and shaka emojis.
