Bernardo Da Silva had 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Noel Coleman also scored 16 points to lead the University of Hawaii men’s basketball team to a dominating 72-56 victory over UC Irvine on Thursday night in Honolulu.

Playing their conference home opener, the Rainbow Warriors (6-5, 2-0 Big West) only trailed in the first few minutes of the game before tying it up at 4-4 on a fastbreak dunk by Junior Madut at the 17:06 mark of the first half. Kamaka Hepa followed with a 3-pointer a couple of minutes later, and UH never trailed again.

Hawaii led 34-26 at the half and outscored the Anteaters 21-8 over the first 10 minutes after the break to pull away.

Jerome Desrosiers had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Jovon McClanahan added 12 points for UH, which shot 42.6 percent from the field.

Collin Welp led UC Irvine (6-5, 1-1) with 11 points.

Earlier Thursday, the UH women’s team never led in an 82-58 loss at UC San Diego.

Amy Atwell recorded her second straight double-double for Hawaii (4-7, 1-1), finishing with 16 points and 12 rebounds despite missing some time in the third quarter with an injury.

That was the pivotal frame during which the Tritons outscored the Rainbow Wahine 26-15 to take a 61-43 lead heading into the fourth. UH could not get closer than 16 points the rest of the game.

Sydney Brown scored 25 points — hitting five of UCSD’s 16 3-pointers — to lead the Tritons (6-7, 3-1).

Both UH teams play again Saturday, with the men hosting UC San Diego and the women visiting UC Irvine.
