Kana’i Akana had five kills and Max Rosenfeld had five blocks, and the No. 1-ranked University of Hawaii men’s volleyball team had another bench-emptying victory over Edward Waters on Sunday at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.

Playing against a team playing just its second official match in program history, the Rainbow Warriors (4-0) hit a jaw-dropping .688 as a team in the 25-10, 25-7, 25-12 victory. They served up 14 aces, including four by setter Jakob Thelle.

Evens Edouard had nine kills to lead the Tigers (0-2).

UH will host its alumni match on Friday, with its next matches at Ball State — with new head coach Donan Cruz, a graduate of Baldwin High School — on Jan. 29 and 31.

• MEN’S BASKETBALL: At Honolulu, the Rainbow Warriors earned their third straight victory with a 79-56 rout of UC San Diego on Saturday night.

Two days after a resounding win over UC Irvine, UH continued its dominating run by racing out to a 23-point halftime lead over the Tritons. The Rainbow Warriors shot 55.6 percent (35 of 63) for the game while also dominating the glass, outrebounding UC San Diego 41-21.

Jerome Desrosiers led the Rainbow Warriors (8-8) with 18 points and 13 rebounds, his third straight double-double. Junior Madut added 15 points and Bernardo da Silva chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds.

Toni Rocak scored 20 points and Francis Nwaokorie added 14 to lead the Tritons (7-5).

The game will not count toward the Big West standings as UCSD is still transitioning to the Division I level.

Hawaii next heads back on the road for games against Cal State Bakersfield on Thursday and Cal Poly on Saturday.

• WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: At Irvine, Calif., the Rainbow Wahine picked up their first road victory of the season Saturday, beating UC Irvine 77-73.

Big West scoring leader Amy Atwell led UH with 20 points. Meilani McBee scored 15 points and Daejah Phillips added 14 points and eight rebounds for the Rainbow Wahine, who won at UC Irvine for the first time since 2017.

UH led by as many as 16 points in the second quarter before the Anteaters used an 11-0 run to close to 39-34 at halftime.

UC Irvine was able to take the lead in the third, though the teams remained close. McBee hit two 3-pointers in a pivotal 9-0 run for Hawaii, and while the Anteaters were able to pull within one they were never able to retake the lead.

The Rainbow Wahine (5-7, 2-1 Big West) shot 57 percent (24 of 42) and had a 37-29 rebounding advantage, helping to offset 21 turnovers, including six by Phillips.

Kayla Williams scored 21 points to lead the Anteaters (8-7, 3-1). Chloe Webb had 16 points and Naomi Hunt added 10.

Hawaii’s next scheduled game — at home Thursday against Cal Poly — has been canceled due to COVID-19 issues within the Mustangs program. The game has been declared a no-contest.

The Rainbow Wahine are set to host Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday.
