The Baldwin High School softball team finished in sixth place in the DataHouse/HHSAA Division I state tournament after a 10-1, five-inning loss to Campbell in the fifth-place game Thursday afternoon at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium in Honolulu.
Already trailing 9-0, the Maui Interscholastic League champion Bears (14-3) scored their lone run in the bottom of the first inning. L.B. Kahahawai-Kekona hit a leadoff double and advanced to third on a throwing error. Raquel Palmeira followed with a single to shortstop to drive in Kahahawai-Kekona.
From there, though, Campbell pitcher Taryn Irimata shut down the Bears, allowing just one single the rest of the way.
Paige Nakashima launched a grand slam in the Sabers’ big first inning.
In the D-I championship game Thursday night, Maryknoll captured its first state title with a 5-2 victory over defending champion and Interscholastic League of Honolulu rival Iolani.
