Maui’s Imaikalani deVault throws some spray during the men’s round of 64 at the Haleiwa Challenger on Wednesday on Oahu’s North Shore. Competing in front of his family, DeVault kept himself mathematically alive for requalification to the World Surf League Championship Tour by posting the highest heat total of the day (15.50). “Today looked really tricky with some slow heats,” deVault was quoted as saying in a WSL news release. “I watched all day and tried not to think about it too much and go with my Haleiwa game plan which is find a second and third wave. You always want to watch for that huge face but it was hard to tell which waves would be good. My family doesn’t usually make it to events, so that was awesome to see me get a good heat in.” There is now six spots left for the Dream Tour after Ramzi Boukhiam secured his spot Wednesday, becoming the first surfer from Morocco to qualify for the CT. Meanwhile, Maui’s Ian Gentil was eliminated in the round of 64 and now must wait to see if his results coming into this competition will be enough to earn him a maiden voyage on the CT. Gentil entered the event just behind Boukhiam in the Challenger Series standings.
