Baldwin girls down Maui Prep for MIL team championship

Ava Kawahara fired a 39 to lead the Baldwin High School girls golf team to a title-clinching 129-135 victory over Maui Prep on Wednesday afternoon at Kapalua.

The Bears and Pueo entered their final match of the season both 4-0, making the showdown a winner-take-all for the Maui Interscholastic League team championship, which comes with four spots to the David S. Ishii Foundation/HHSAA State Championship, May 9-10 at Wailua Golf Course on Kauai.

Behind a medalist performance from Kawahara and steady play from Anessa Riglos and Anica Ancheta, Baldwin claimed its fifth straight league title.

Riglos and Ancheta both shot 45. Alyssa Ching’s 58 was dropped.

Na Pueo, playing their first girls golf season, were led by Sacha Salem, who shot a 41. Tehya Chumley carded a 43 and Sofia Malari had a 51. Layla Merrill’s 57 was dropped.
