Hyatt Regency Maui partners with popular television show to celebrate 100th episode

Want to have a cameo appearance on one of Hawaii’s most popular culinary programs? How about savor a gourmet dinner at the celebration of its 100th episode at one of the state’s top resorts?

The ninth season of “Cooking Hawaiian Style” will be filmed at Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa in Kaanapali this evening — and it’s a tribute to the show’s centennial episode. The word is that attendees at the dinner will have the opportunity to be included in an upcoming episode to be aired at a later date.

The dinner and the filming start at 5:30 p.m. today on the resort’s Halona Kai Lawn overlooking the pools, the ocean and the Neighbor Islands beyond.

” ‘Cooking Hawaiian Style’ has shared thousands of meals and recipes with its loyal audience who love learning the history and origins of meals that have been passed down through generations of Hawaiians,” says Host and Chef Lanai Tabura.

Celebrating the migration of plantation workers who came to toil in the fields from China, Japan, Korea, Portugal and the Philippines, “Cooking Hawaiian Style” host Tabura uses moolelo, or storytelling, and partners with chefs who use local ingredients to create mouthwatering meals for viewers.

“I have such a passion for sharing the genuine Hawaiian cuisine with locals and visitors,” says Tabura. “I am thrilled to be partnering with Hyatt Regency Maui to celebrate the 100th episode of ‘Cooking Hawaiian Style,’ a program that showcases all of the communities and flavors that make Hawaiian cuisine so special.”

Today’s dinner will be cooked and presented by chefs Gevin Utrillo and Jin Hosono of the resort’s award-winning Japengo restaurant that is famous for its Maui Tastemakers series that runs every other month.

Their dinner will feature dishes inspired by the cultures mentioned earlier, whose cuisine has inspired Hawaiian cooking over the decades. Each course includes a pairing from MauiWine in Ulupalakua.

You may begin with an appetizer of ulu, or breadfruit, and taro croquette served with lomilomi salmon, Maui onions, crispy salmon skin and Molokai purple chips. Then you may dive into pot stickers filled with Kona lobster and Hamakua mushrooms served with Chinese hot mustard and shoyu sauce on the side.

The next courses are Bara Chirashi Sushi with tuna, hamachi, salmon, kampachi, shrimp, tamago, unagi, ikura, sweet dried gourd, fish floss, kaiware sprouts and sushi rice; glazed duck meatballs served with kimchi and gochujang; crispy pork belly with adobo glaze and garlic fried rice; and malasadas with Big Island chocolate ganache.

‘Cooking Hawaiian Style’ dinner details

Festivities will begin at 5:30 p.m. today at Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa’s Halona Kai Lawn in Kaanapali. Japengo chefs will cook a six-course dinner that will be paired with MauiWine selections. Cost of $137 includes tax and gratuity. For reservations, call 667-4727.
