2 elderly Oahu residents die from COVID-19; 53 new cases, 1 in Maui

State health officials reported this morning two elderly Oahu residents as the latest COVID-19 fatalities for the state, bringing Hawaii’s death toll to 29.

Meanwhile, the state logged 53 new COVID-19 cases today, with one on Maui.

An elderly female with underlying medical conditions had been a resident at a Pearl City nursing home but then was hospitalized. An elderly man with underlying health issues was also in the hospital when he died, a state Department of Health news release said.

“The passing of this man really demonstrates how rapidly and invisibly COVID-19 is spreading through our communities, particularly on Oahu and particularly associated with clusters,” state epidemiologist Dr. Sarah Park said in the release. “A close contact of this individual attended a spin class at a gym taught by a person linked to the Hawaiian Airlines cluster.”

State health officials reported 53 new COVID-19 cases today, with 52 on Oahu and one in Maui County.

Oahu’s total is 2,445 cases since tracking began, with one removed due to an error. Maui’s total ticked up to 178.

Hawaii island remained at 122, and Kauai stayed at 47. There have been 23 residents diagnosed out of state.

The state has logged 2,815 cases of COVID-19 since tracking began Feb. 28. Of those cases, 8 percent have required hospitalization and there have been 29 fatalities, including six on Maui.
