Two men drown in diving incident

Two Maui men in their 20’s drowned Tuesday after diving in the area of Peahi Farms, fire officials said.

One individual was declared dead at the scene and the second man was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition, but later died, fire officials said.

The two men became separated from a group of five men diving in the Haiku-Pauwela area, and 911 was called for assistance.

When fire crews arrived, all individuals were out of the water at the bottom of a 130 foot cliff. Two individuals were unresponsive, fire officials said.

Engine 2 personnel from Paia descended the cliff and initiated CPR on the two unresponsive men.

Rescue 10 from Kahului and the Air One helicopter were utilized to lift the two victims to the top of the cliffs were EMS personnel were waiting and life saving efforts continued.

Fire officials said there was a high surf advisory issued and waves were forecast to be in the 10 to 15 foot range with light winds.

Other crews responding include Maui County’s Ocean Safety Jet Ski 2 out of Hookipa.
