Dialed-in Stansberry leads UH over Vikings
The Maui News
Eddie Stansberry drained six 3-pointers and finished with a career-high 28 points, and the University of Hawaii men’s basketball team improved to 3-1 on the season with an 83-75 victory over Portland State on Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
Stansberry made all but one of his attempts from long distance as the Rainbow Warriors went 11-of-20 from behind the arc.
Drew Buggs added 13 points, Samuta Avea scored 12 and Zigmars Raimo flirted with a triple-double, totaling 10 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists for the Rainbow Warriors.
UH led by as many as nine points in the first half before the Vikings rallied to close to 40-38 at the break.
A layup by Holland Woods tied it up at 40 in the opening minute of the second half, but Stansberry answered with a 3 at the other end, and UH never trailed again.
Matt Hauser had 18 points and seven rebounds, Woods finished with 12 points and Chris Whitaker had 10 for the Vikings (1-2).
The Rainbow Warriors have a quick turnaround, traveling to take on Illinois in Champaign on Monday. The game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. Hawaii time and will be televised on ESPNU.
