UH claims Big West title with sweep of Beach

In front of a sellout crowd on Senior Night, the University of Hawaii women’s volleyball team sent fans home early and happy.

The 18th-ranked Rainbow Wahine trailed for just two points the whole night in dispatching Long Beach State 25-18, 25-12, 25-20 on Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu to clinch the outright Big West Conference championship.

Brooke Van Sickle and senior McKenna Ross each had nine kills, and senior Norene Iosia had 20 assists, seven aces and five digs to lead the Rainbow Wahine, who finished the regular season at 24-3 overall, 14-2 in the Big West to claim their first conference title since 2016.

UH hit .333 while holding the 49ers to .130. The ‘Bows only trailed at the start of each of the first two sets, at 1-0, in a dominating performance.

Kashauna Williams had 10 kills to lead the Beach (12-15, 9-6), who had won five of their last six matches.

The Rainbow Wahine now must wait until the NCAA Tournament bracket is revealed on Dec. 1.
