Shawn Stith scored 13 points and Taze Moore had 10 points and nine rebounds to lead Cal State Bakersfield to a 60-55 victory over the University of Hawaii men’s basketball team on Friday night at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
Junior Madut had 12 points and 10 rebounds, James Jean-Marie had 11 points and Mate Colina added 10 points for the Rainbow Warriors (3-2, 1-2 Big West Conference).
The Roadrunners (8-4, 4-1) led 28-23 after a low-scoring first half for both teams. UH was able to tie the game up three times in the second half before finally going ahead 49-47 on a 3-pointer by Madut with 6:43 remaining.
But the lead was shortlived, with Justin Elder-Davis responding with a 3 of his own on the other end to put Bakersfield back ahead, and the Roadrunners never trailed again.
A 3-pointer by Casdon Jardine pulled UH within 56-55 with 1:44 left, but a pair of Hawaii turnovers and a missed 3 by Madut helped Bakersfield hold on for the win.
The Rainbow Warriors shot 33.3 percent (18 of 54) from the field, and just 20 percent (5 of 25) from behind the arc. They also committed 16 turnovers, leading to 16 Roadrunner points.
The teams play again today.
