The third-ranked University of Hawaii men’s volleyball team committed 27 service errors en route to dropping its first match of the season Friday night, a five-setter against No. 10 Loyola-Chicago at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
The Rainbow Warriors (1-1), who swept the Ramblers in a close match Wednesday, lost 18-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-23, 15-13 despite out-hitting their opponents .469 to .310 and also holding slight advantages in blocks and digs.
Spyros Chakas had 22 kills, Alaka’i Todd had 12 kills and Chaz Galloway added 11 kills for UH. Tread Rosenthal dished out 58 assists and had four of UH’s 11 aces but also had a match-high eight service errors.
After Loyola forced a fifth set, UH appeared to take control with a 4-1 run that put them up 12-7. But the Ramblers (1-1) responded with a run of their own to tie it up at 12. After a kill from Todd, UH committed their fifth and final service error of the set, and the Ramblers finished out the match on a kill from Jake Read and block of Chakas.
Parker Van Buren led Loyola with 20 kills.
UH next hosts Emmanuel on Wednesday and Friday.
