No. 3 UH sweeps away No. 1 Lopes

Spyros Chakas had 14 kills and Alaka’i Todd added 11 as the third-ranked University of Hawaii men’s volleyball team swept past top-ranked Grand Canyon 25-17, 25-20, 25-20 in the Outrigger Volleyball Invitational on Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Warriors (16-1) dominated in every phase of the match against the Lopes (15-2), who suffered their first loss of the season the night before in a five-setter against No. 5 UC Irvine. UH held advantages in hitting percentage (.449-.304), service aces (8-1), digs (19-17) and blocks (10-4).

The Rainbow Warriors were so locked in that the latest they trailed in any set was at 10-9 in the second.

Chakas and Todd each had two aces, and Chakas also had a team-high eight digs. Chaz Galloway had seven kills and five blocks, Kurt Nusterer had six blocks and three aces, and Tread Rosenthal had 37 assists and three blocks.

Camden Gianni had 16 kills to lead Grand Canyon.

UH next takes on the Anteaters in an all-Big West showdown on Sunday.
