UH, UNLV to play for new trophy

The University of Hawaii football team will play UNLV today in Las Vegas with the “Island Showdown Trophy” at stake.

The prize has been introduced this year.

“Hawaii and Las Vegas have always shared a special connection,” UH athletic director David Matlin was quoted as saying on the school’s website. “The Island Showdown Trophy is a great symbol of that connection and an exciting addition to the UH-UNLV rivalry.”

As is always the case when the Rainbow Warriors visit the Rebels, the road team is expected to have a sizable contingent of fans.

“It’s going to be a great crowd, a lot of green,” UH coach Nick Rolovich said online.

The game will have two of the nation’s leading rushers. Diocemy Saint Juste has run for 1,134 yards for the Rainbow Warriors (3-4, 0-2 Mountain West Conference) this season, sixth among Bowl Subdivision teams. Lexington Thomas has run for 965 yards for the Rebels (3-5, 2-3), 12th in the country, and his 13 rushing touchdowns are tied for fifth.

Thomas ran for 88 yards last week in a 26-16 win over Fresno State, which had been unbeaten in Mountain West play and leads the conference’s West Division.

Johnny Stanton made his season debut at quarterback against the Bulldogs, after Armani Rogers was injured in the previous week’s loss at Utah State. The depth chart for today lists Stanton or Rogers as the starter.

“Depending on who plays, it poses different problems for our defense,” Rolovich said.

Stanton passed for 155 yards and ran for 38 and a touchdown against Fresno State. Rogers has thrown for 1,063 yards with five touchdowns and four interceptions this season, and run for 535 yards and six scores.

“We’ll make sure that both guys are ready to go,” UNLV coach Tony Sanchez said on the school’s athletics website.

“Whoever we feel like is going to give us that best opportunity, we’re going to go with.”
