Rainbow Wahine’s season ends in NCAA first round

The University of Hawaii women’s volleyball team lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1997 on Friday, falling in five sets to Illinois, 25-18, 25-17, 13-25, 24-26, 15-10 in Seattle.
Emily Maglio had 18 kills to lead the Rainbow Wahine, who finish at 20-8 in Robyn Ah Mow’s first year as head coach.
Senior libero Savanah Kahakai had 14 digs to move past Elizabeth Kaaihue into second place in school history with 1,417 career digs. McKenna Granato had 15 kills and 21 digs, Natasha Burns added 13 kills, Norene Iosia had 33 assists and 11 digs, and Faith Maafala had 29 assists and 14 digs.
Jacqueline Quade led the Illini (22-10) with 15 kills. Illinois faces eighth-seeded Washington in the second round today with a spot in the regional semifinals on the line.
