Slater’s big heat ends Toledo’s run at world title
Eleven-time world champion Kelly Slater competes during the second round of the Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons — the last stop on the World Surf League Championship Tour and the Vans Triple Crown — on Sunday on Oahu’s North Shore. Slater won his heat and then played spoiler in the third round when he defeated Filipe Toledo 15.60-6.77, eliminating the Brazilian from the event and contention for the world title. That leaves Julian Wilson of Australia and Gabriel Medina of Brazil left to battle it out for the tour championship. The competition could run its finals day today, if conditions permit.
