Brazil’s Medina claims WSL world championship

First photo: Gabriel Medina of Brazil competes during finals day of the Billabong Pipe Masters on Monday on Oahu’s North Shore. Medina claimed his second world title when he won his semifinal heat over Jordy Smith, and then defeated Australian Julian Wilson — who had been his challenger for the World Surf League Championship Tour crown — in a high-scoring final. In surf of 6-8 feet, Medina posted a two-wave score of 18.34 to beat Wilson’s 16.70 and claim his first Pipe Masters title. Medina’s other world championship came in 2014. Second photo: Medina is carried off the beach after his win. The event closed not only the CT season, but also capped the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing — Brazil’s Jesse Mendes claimed the Triple Crown title.
