A Maui photographer was recently awarded second place in the International Photography Awards with his photo “Hale Honu,” taken on the upper west side of the island and offering a unique glimpse into the mysterious world of Hawaii’s beloved green sea turtles.
Todd Kawasaki’s photo was selected from 15,000 entries from 103 countries, according to Lahaina Printsellers, which is showcasing the photographer’s work both on premium cotton canvas and dye-infused aluminum. Kawasaki also won a silver and a bronze in the 2016 International Pano Awards, the largest competition for panoramic photography. This year, there were 4,545 entries from 60 countries.
Over the last three years, Kawasaki has accumulated 17 photography awards, including first place in the Hawaii Magazine photo contest of 2015. He invests an inordinate amount of time, planning and composing his photographs, anticipating that perfect moment when he releases the shutter, according to the gallery, which also produces an extensive array of giclee prints on canvas.
Lahaina Printsellers also offers works from local and international artists, with a variety of giclee prints to accommodate all types of art lovers.
“Our goal is to provide high-quality artwork at affordable prices, whether your needs are one piece of artwork or several,” says owner Charlene Walker. “Our giclee prints can be printed in dimensions to accommodate any wall space and budget.”
The Lahaina Printsellers’ original antique map gallery has been a fixture on Maui since 1978. Nestled in the rear of its contemporary art gallery, you will find a cornucopia of original antique maps of Hawaii, the Pacific and the world.
Community members are invited to stop by the gallery, located at 764 Front St., during the town’s Friday Night Art Night, featuring artwork accompanied by freshly made mai tais, wine and live music with renowned classical guitarist Jim Spector. Kawasaki will be at the gallery from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday to discuss the stories behind his work.
