The Schaefer International Gallery at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului will host its newest student art exhibit “Young Creatives: Intergalactica” May 14 through June 9.

This biennial exhibition is a showcase for the work of students in grades K through 12 from across Maui.

“We are pleased to present the work of Maui students from around the island with their take on this year’s ‘big universe’ theme,” said Gallery Director Neida Bangerter. “The lively mix of paintings, drawings and sculpture express wonderfully creative ideas about the young artists’ view of the world beyond.”

All Maui public and private schools were invited to participate.

In connection with the exhibit, there will be several related events taking place.

On two consecutive Wednesdays, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. May 17 and 24, free lab sessions will be held for students in grades 6 through 12. Students will learn approaches to science and engineering with the gallery’s lab teams — Fuzz Box Productions and Maui Makers. Space is limited and interested students may register by emailing shannon@mauiarts.org.

The gallery’s Observe and Play Family Day takes place from 10 a.m. to noon May 26. This event offers families an opportunity to enjoy interactive play and a rocket launch with Maui Makers, along with participating in an alien painting station. Admission is free.

Even though the exhibition is student-related, the Schaefer Gallery is not forgetting about adult patrons. The summer edition of ArT=Mixx: SUPERNOVA will take place from 7 to 11 p.m. June 9 in the gallery, Yokouchi Pavilion and A&B Amphitheater.

The ArT=Mixx events feature DJs, visual art and live performances. Attendees are encouraged to come in costume (or not), dance, mix and mingle while connecting with the arts. Must be 21 or older with a valid photo ID to attend.
