“Surfing Hawai’i” presents the most popular ocean sport, beginning with the origins of “he’e nalu,” or “surfing waves,” in Native Hawaiian traditional knowledge of and recreational relationship to the ocean.

The story continues with the evolution of surf tourism and culture in the islands today, as seen with materials from archives, surfboards from collections and vintage posters.

A group of accomplished artists from Hawaii, whose work focuses on themes of surfing, were invited to create original contemporary work for this exhibit including Carol Bennett from Kauai; Pete Cabrinha, Charlie Lyon and Noble Richardson from Maui; and Peter Shepard Cole and Mark Cunningham from Oahu.

The exhibit is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays, holidays excepted, as well as before and during intermission for select Castle Theater events. Admission to the exhibit is free.
