From 4 to 6 p.m. today and 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, the public may meet the crew of the world-famous Hokule’a Hawaiian sailing canoe on Lanai, with more festivities Friday evening and Saturday morning with Polynesian Voyaging Society hats, shirts and keepsakes for sale.

A short walk up the hill from Manele Small Boat Harbor is Malibu Farm restaurant, poolside at the Four Seasons Resort Lanai. “Fresh, organic and local” is the motto. You may savor kale Caesars, burgers with bacon marmalade and freshly squeezed juices.

New Food & Beverage Director is Dan Mizrahi, who has led Four Seasons culinary teams in Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Washington, D.C., Hawaii Island and more.

“Dan is a wonderful addition to the Lanai ohana,” says Alastair McAlpine, resort GM. “His Four Seasons tenure speaks to his extensive experience delivering high-level, luxury service to discerning travelers in our restaurants and private dining as well as social occasions such as group events and festive weddings.”

South Shore Tiki Lounge is proud to partner with Aloha Maui Pride and Absolut Vodka for a Pride Summer Series. Starting this weekend, it will run the first Saturday of every month, starting at 10 p.m. There will be no cover charge at this popular Kihei hot spot.

“We’ll feature beats by DJ Kurt, special cocktail ‘Tikinis’ from Absolut, and dancing by you!” says South Shore Tiki Lounge owner Alma Tassi. “A portion of proceeds will be donated to Aloha Maui Pride for LGBTQ Pride Festival on Oct 12. Look for special guests and other announcements throughout the summer.”

While Wailuku boasts iconic pastry shops such as Home Maid Bakery on Lower Main Street and Stillwell’s on Kaahumanu Avenue, the new Hoi Hoi Hawaiian Bakery at Maui Lani Shopping Center is not only drawing in the crowds, it’s expanding to West Maui.

“We’re waiting for the go-ahead, permits pending, to open Hoi Hoi Patisserie at The Fairway Shops in Kaanapali next to Hair Hale and near CJ’s Diner,” says family owner Jong-Rak Kim. “Like in Hawaiian, hoi hoi can mean, ‘joy,’ or even ‘pleasant.’ ”

The Kim family also plans to open a Paia restaurant in the old Hana Ranch Provisions spot on Baldwin Avenue.

“They left a couple of years ago, because the roof caved in,” continues Kim. “So it’s going to be sushi, Korean and Japanese food. We took over the whole building, and it will be called ‘Bap,’ which means ‘meal’ or ‘rice’ or ‘food’ in the Korean language. We’ll be dropping off more pastries on that side, too. We’re hoping to open Bap by the end of May or early June.”

Egg on my face time: In last week’s Maui Scene, I wrote a feature on Plantation House in Kapalua and mentioned that Pineapple Grill down the hill is closed, but Kelly Burke Williams, director of sales and marketing for Kapalua Golf & Tennis, says that it’s “now a dining space used for private events only.” So apparently you can rent it out for parties and functions.

Longtime restaurant industry person Allen Mann of Maui Party Rentals, bungee jumped off Toronto Tower for his 70th birthday earlier this week.

“As the old saying goes, ‘you only live once,’ ” he texted from 100 stories up.
