‘Talk Story with Tegarden’ session set

A “Talk Story with Tegarden” session will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday by Deidre Tegarden, a Democratic candidate for the South Maui seat in the state House of Representatives.

The event will be at Tegarden headquarters at the Azeka Makai Shopping Center above Flowers by Cora.

The candidate will be on hand to discuss concerns with members of the public.

This week’s speaker is Sam Kaha’i Kaai, who will discuss the history of Kihei, according to an announcement from the campaign.

Alika Atay to hold a meet-and-greet event

Maui County Council candidate Alika Atay will hold a meet-and-greet event from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Velma McWayne Santos Community Center in Wailuku.

Atay is seeking the council’s Wailuku-Waihee-Waikapu residency seat.

Atay will discuss his stance on issues during the event, which will feature food cooked by the Atay ohana, Hawaiian music and door prizes.

Maui County Council candidate Hana Steel will hold a “platform discussion” from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 4 under the Banyan Tree in Lahaina.

Steel is seeking the council’s Wailuku-Waihee-Waikapu residency seat.

The topic of the discussion will be the “Silver Tsunami,” focusing on whether Maui is prepared for 28,000 people over age 70 in less than 15 years, according to an announcement for Steel’s campaign.

Democratic South Maui state House candidate Deidre Tegarden has been endorsed by the Hawaii State AFL-CIO, according to an announcement.

Union President Randy Perreira was quoted as saying: “We believe that is especially crucial to support candidates who believe that all workers deserve a living wage, a safe and healthy workplace and that hard-won benefits are protected.”

Tegarden is facing incumbent Rep. Kaniela Ing in the Democratic primary. The winner will go on to meet Republican Daniel Pekus in the Nov. 8 general election.

Kane fundraiser planned Tuesday

Maui County Council candidate Dain Kane will hold a fundraiser from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Velma McWayne Santos Community Center in Wailuku.

The cost is $25 per person with children under 12 free. Tickets will be available at the door.

The event will include pupu, dinner, music by Ron Kualaau & Friends and door prizes.

Regan stages rockin’ event for Wailuku

A “Rockin’ with Regan” event will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. July 5 at the Velma McWayne Santos Community Center in Wailuku as a campaign fundraiser for Maui County Council candidate Keith Regan, the county’s managing director.

The event will feature dinner, 1950s-themed entertainment and door prizes. The cost to attend is $10.

Those attending the event are asked to bring two canned goods as a donation for Maui veterans. They will be entered into a grand prize drawing, and those “best dressed” in ’50s attire will win a prize.

Sugimura plans S. Maui fundraiser

A fundraiser for Maui County Council candidate Yuki Lei Sugimura will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 12 at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall in Kihei, according to an announcement.

The event will feature food, entertainment by Ron Kualaau and a chance to meet the candidate. A suggested donation is $5. The hall is at 2110 Uluniu Road.

A meet-the-candidate event will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Tiffany’s Bar & Grill for Maui County Council candidate Joe Blackburn.

Teachers union endorses Ing

Democratic South Maui Rep. Kaniela Ing has been endorsed by the Hawaii State Teachers Association.

The union represents 13,500 educators statewide, according to an announcement.

Ing said it’s the third straight election cycle he has received support from the teachers union.

“I am a product of Maui public schools, so support for our teachers is personal to me,” Ing said. “Great teachers should be treated and compensated like the heroes they are.”

Tegarden receives endorsements

The Political Action Committee of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 1186, and the University of Hawaii Professional Assembly have endorsed Democrat Deidre Tegarden for the state House of Representatives 11th District seat.

The 11th House District includes Kihei, Wailea and Makena.

The union has more than 3,900 active members and more than 120 signatory contractors statewide, according to an announcement.

The professional assembly represents nearly 4,000 faculty at all 10 University of Hawaii system campuses.

Regan opens headquarters

Maui County Council candidate Keith Regan held a blessing and grand opening for his campaign headquarters June 3.

The headquarters is at 1823 Wells St., at the corner of Kanoa and Wells streets in Wailuku. It is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Regan is one of five candidates seeking the County Council’s Wailuku-Waihee-Waikapu residency seat. The two top vote-getters in the Aug. 13 primary will advance to the Nov. 8 general election.

Green Party endorses Nikhilananda

Following its state convention last month on the Big Island, the Green Party of Hawaii endorsed Green Party candidate Nick Nikhilananda for the 13th House District seat held by Democratic Rep. Lynn DeCoite.

Nikhilananda has no primary opponent for his party’s nomination. On Nov. 8, he’ll face the winner of the Democratic primary, DeCoite or her opponent, Alex Haller.

The 13th House District serves residents of Haiku, Paia, East Maui, Molokai and Lanai.

In an announcement of the endorsement, Nikhilananda is described as a “longtime Maui County community activist.”

The candidate said: “Accountability, sustainability and transparency will be my guiding principles as I undertake the quest to represent the people and residents of three of the most remote communities on three different islands of the state of Hawaii: the north shore and East Maui, Molokai and Lanai. I am active, educated and informed, and we should not expect less in a representative.”

Mele fundraiser for Greig-Nakasone

Napua Greig-Nakasone, who is running for the Upcountry County Council residency seat, will hold an “Under a Maui Moon” fundraiser from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Velma McWayne Santos Community Center in Wailuku, according to an announcement.

The cost is $25 and will include luau food and entertainment. The entertainment lineup includes: Raiatea Helm, Amy Hanaiali’i Gilliom, Halau Na Lei Kaumaka o Uka, Keali’i Reichel and Halau Ke’alaokamaile.

Tegarden to host S. Maui cleanup event

Democratic South Maui House candidate Deidre Tegarden will sponsor an event for volunteers to clean up the Kihei Veterans of Foreign Wars grounds and a beach cleanup from 7 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday, according to an announcement.

Volunteers will meet at 7 a.m. at the Friends of Deidre Tegarden headquarters, located in a second-floor unit (above Flowers by Cora) at the Azeka Makai Shopping Center in Kihei. Breakfast and T-shirts will be provided.

Workers will get complimentary shave ice after the event, according to the announcement.

Stylish fundraiser planned in Kihei

A fashion show fundraiser, “Jewels, Jeans and Jazz,” will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. July 9 at the Mana Kai Maui Resort in Kihei to help with the campaign of Democratic House candidate Deidre Tegarden.

The event costs $40 per person and includes an assortment of finger sandwiches, pastries, teas and a champagne punch served while models showcase outfits presented by WaterLily Maui, according to an announcement.

Soft jazz music will be performed by Francois Kie. Suggested attire is “jeans and glitzy bling.”

Parking is available in the gravel lot near South Kihei Road.
