Malama Maui Nui hosts 18th Art of Trash exhibition
Artists encouraged to submit entries in person by March 28
The 18th Art of Trash exhibition, presented by Malama Maui Nui, will open at the Maui Mall 5 to 8:30 p.m. April 4. The show will run through May 2 with gallery hours from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
This year’s theme, “Recycle, Reinvent, Repurpose,” encourages artists and designers to think about trash in a nontraditional sense and to use it as raw material for creative inspiration instead of simply throwing it away.
Center stage on opening night will feature live music by Sargenti’s Junkyard Dogs playing instruments made of repurposed trash, Samba Maui’s beats, and this year’s Trashion Show.
Residents of Maui County are invited to participate as an artist for the Art of Trash Gallery or as a designer for the Trashion Show. All artwork must follow criteria stated in the entry form and is selected for the show by long-time juror, Judy Bruder.
“I am interested in the work and workmanship that Maui artists do by transforming materials and discarded objects into thoughtful art pieces while they consider the fragile environment,” Bruder said in explaining her selection process.
Those wishing to participate in this year’s event will need to complete an online entry form available at www.malamamauinui.org/artoftrash.
All art will need to be submitted in person between 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. March 28 and requires a $15 fee per piece. Artists are encouraged to submit several pieces for consideration. All Trashion Show pieces must be submitted via the online form and be accompanied by a photograph of the design by March 28 in order to be considered to walk the runway.
