1920 — Japanese women loading cane under contract for the Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. earned as much as $120.35 during the month of February. Thirty-three women earned more than $80, and 13 of these in excess of $100.

1945 — A decrease of about 25,000 pounds daily in the amount of garbage available to Maui hog raisers is forcing many of them to sell their herds. The Maui Swine Growers Cooperative Association decided to appeal to food-control authorities for an increased quota of imported feed in order that they may maintain their breeding herds.
50 Years Ago
1970 — The state has released $106,778 for construction of six more cabins at Waianapanapa State Park near Hana. The popular stop for both residents and visitors to Hawaii now has six cabins.
25 Years Ago
1995 — Maui County is leading the state’s efforts to divert solid waste from landfills, and credit for that success is being given to the controversial co-composting project at Central Maui landfill.
10 Years Ago
2010 — Kula Hospital has received $5 million in state funding to add 15 long-term beds — a long-awaited development that would relieve Maui Memorial Medical Center of some patients occupying acute-care beds.
