Akaku wins three awards at media conference

Akaku Maui Community Media came away with three awards recognizing its coverage of the election, sustainable farming and soil health during a media conference in California last month.
Each year the Santa Barbara Alliance for Community Media West Regional Conference includes the Western Access Video Excellence, or WAVE awards. This year's ceremony was held on Feb. 23.
Akaku was recognized in the professional category for its Maui primary election coverage, with Production Director Dan O'Brien and co-host Chivo Ching-Johnson accepting the award on behalf of the entire Akaku team.
Akaku also received an award in the professional category of documentary for its video, "Hokunui Farm in Makawao Maui: A Whole System Approach," that documents the work behind creating a holistic approach to sustainable farming on Maui.
Another award came from the professional category for community issues for "Hawaii Soil Health Initiative Convening and Demonstration on Maui," which followed a landmark meeting and partnership to rebuild the health of the soil in Hawaii.
These two videos were from a five-part documentary series produced in collaboration with the Hawaii Farmers Union United.
Producer Kat Tracy accepted the awards on behalf of the crew, which included cameramen Daniel Emhof and Austin Hutto with Ingrid Thronson on audio.
