Herbert Masanori Tanahara, better known as “Masa” and “Sparrow” to those who grew up with him on Maui and Herb to just about everyone else – one of the “good guys” who enjoyed spending time with his many friends, passed peacefully on Jan. 4 in Honolulu following a brief illness. He was 87. Chieko Hiwatashi, 101 of Kahului, Maui passed away on November 23, 2019 at Maui Memorial Medical Center. She was born on December 1, 1917 in Puunene. Private services were held. She retired after working more then 30 years from the Maui Memorial Hospital, State of Hawaii. Chieko was an independent woman who enjoyed her family, cooking, sewing and gardening.
