Florida Panthers hope to rebound from blowout loss

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — There was lots of chatter at the Florida Panthers’ breakfast the morning after the Edmonton Oilers blew them out 8-1 in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final to send the series back across North America. As lopsided as that loss was in their first chance to close out the series, the Panthers return home to South Florida up 3-1 in the final with another opportunity to win the first championship in franchise history in front of their home fans. “It’s all about us (needing) to manage the losses,” captain Aleksander Barkov said. “Obviously it only counts as ...

Celtics back home with chance to close out Mavericks and clinch 18th title

BOSTON — The Boston Celtics’ catastrophic performance in Game 4 of the NBA Finals gave them a chance to clinch another championship on Monday night under the 17 banners already hanging in the TD Garden rafters. And, coach Joe Mazzulla reminded them, that they would still have two more chances after that. “We don’t like to lose,” Celtics guard Jaylen Brown said before practice on Sunday. “I think we are ready for Game 5. I think that’s the best answer that I’ve got. I think that we’re ready. We’re at home. And we’re looking forward to it.” The Celtics cruised ...

Doncic scores 29, Mavericks roll past the Celtics 122-84 to avoid a sweep

DALLAS — Luka Doncic scored 25 of his 29 points in the first half, Kyrie Irving added 21 points and the Dallas Mavericks emphatically extended their season on Friday night, fending off elimination by beating the Boston Celtics 122-84 in Game 4 of the NBA Finals. The Mavs’ stars were done by the end of the third quarter, with good reason. It was all Dallas from the outset, the Mavs leading by 13 after one quarter, 26 at the half and by as many as 38 in the third before both sides emptied the benches. The 38-point final margin was the third-biggest ever in an NBA Finals game, ...

Florida Panthers are calm and businesslike on the verge of winning Stanley Cup

EDMONTON, Alberta — One win away from a championship, it feels like the Florida Panthers are treating Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final like Game 44 of the regular season. “Our whole mindset right now is recovering and getting prepared for the next game,” forward Sam Bennett said after beating the Edmonton Oilers in Game 3 to move to the verge of a sweep. “I don’t think anyone can really look ahead.” With coach Paul Maurice and captain Aleksander Barkov setting the tone, the Panthers are looking ahead only to Game 4 on the road Saturday night as the next challenge in their ...

Aberg takes 1-shot lead into weekend at Pinehurst in US Open debut

PINEHURST, N.C. — The U.S. Open is a new experience for Ludvig Aberg, not that anyone would notice the way his machine-like game gave him the 36-hole lead Friday. Pinehurst No. 2 is not. Aberg was a 19-year-old from Sweden about to start his college career at Texas Tech when he came to this Donald Ross gem for the 2019 U.S. Amateur, losing in the second round. “I remember it was one of my first experiences coming over and playing a really hard golf course in America,” Aberg said. “And I was like, ‘Is this what golf in America is like?’ Luckily it’s not like this every ...

Anti-Imperialists Ignore Russia Using Africans as Cannon Fodder

Vladimir Putin doesn’t have enough Russians to maintain the full fury of his barbaric assault on Ukraine, so he is sending African workers and students to the frontlines, threatening the visas of those who won’t go. One must ask why the anti-Israel left, so sensitive to racist practices less obvious than this one, aren’t setting up tents and recharging their bullhorns to protest Russia’s war crimes. They just look the other way. In March, a handful of far-left reps joined the MAGA right in voting against helping arm Ukraine, a sovereign country that did not kidnap Russians, ...
