One of Maui's eminent, most accomplished keyboard players, Salvador Godinez, who has performed with many entertainers on our island for more than 40 years, has been contending with cancer.
"When we found out, we all rallied together to help, to pray, to play music for him, and to help his healing process, so he can perform again," says his musician sister Estaire Godinez.
A special benefit night has been arranged to raise money for him at Nalu's South Shore Grill in Kihei on Oct. 23. Musicians performing include Amy Hanaiali'i, John, Cruz, Marty Dread, Tarvin Makia, Nara Boone, the Godinez family, Gina Martinelli, Mark Johnston, and more.
"Salvador visited Hawaii in the '70s and then returned in the early '80s to Maui to live," says Estaire Godinez. "Since then he's graced us all with lovely music, impeccable character, and a gentle soul."
The oldest of 9 brothers and sisters from the East Bay Area, "as children he inspired us all with his love for music," Estaire recalls. "Our parents always had music playing at home, Agustín Lara, Los Panchos, trios, and mariachis. Then his love for Sergio Mendes, and Brasil '66 just highlighted everything. You can hear all of those sounds that have influenced him in his music, and his lyrics, so passionate and heartfelt.
A versatile keyboardist and vocalist adept at a broad range of music from classical to jazz and Latin, he was once featured in a New York Times article on Maui spotlighting his playing at Wailea's Four Seasons Resort.
A long creative collaboration with Amy Hanaiali'i began at the Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua some 27 years ago. When she teamed with Willie K, Godinez began recording with the couple. These include the albums "Nostalgia," and her most recent recording "Kalawai'anui." In the last few years he has collaborated with John Cruz.
The benefit for Sal Godinez is presented on Oct. 23, with doors opening at 5 p.m. and music from 6 to 10. Dinner and music costs $55. Those not eating dinner are requested to make a donation. Call 808-891-8650.
