R&B Queens to ignite Maui at Mulligan’s on the Blue

It’s going to be a memorable night when Maui’s R&B Queens Nara Boone, Shea Derrick, Sheryl Renee, and Rabbitt pay tribute to female soul and funk legends like Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, and Jill Scott at Mulligan’s on the Blue on Oct 5.
For Maui’s Na Hoku Hanohano Award nominated artist Rabbitt, it’s an opportunity to perform the style of music she loves.
Following a rehearsal with all the queens, Rabbitt reports, “the rehearsal was amazing with a 6-piece band including horns. It’s going to be such an incredible show.”
The idea of the tribute came from Shea Derrick, who performs on Maui with her Full Flavor Band. “This is all wonderful Shae’s undertaking,” says Rabbitt. “Over the years we’ve crossed paths in the music scene, and we’ve talked about how cool it would be to do an homage to the VH1 Divas type show. Shea has a fantastic band, and we finally made it happen. I was just so excited and honored to be part of the lineup.”
As far as the night’s repertoire, “there’s some Chaka Khan, Angel Scott, and Alicia Keys. We will be showcasing solo songs, and then we’ll also be doing backup vocals with the other girls as well for their music selections, and we’re all going to do a group song at the end.”
Based in Kahului, Rabbitt began her singing career while a student at Baldwin High School. “I went to the drama program there when Miss Loudon was teaching, and I attribute that to discovering the voice I have now,” she recalls. “I always sang when I was younger. My dad was a heavy metal singer. In my senior year, we did ‘The Wiz’ at Baldwin, and I played Aunt Em, and really kind of came into my own that year. Myself and three other girls here on island from different high schools were kind of discovered by two brothers from L.A. This is back when Destiny’s Child and girl groups were really big. So they formed this girl group called Mocha-La. We recorded a demo and did some corporate events in Wailea and a big performance at Queen Ka’ahumanu Center.”
In her early 20s, she started performing around Maui and released two albums, “Rabbitt” and “Chapters,” which were both nominated for Na Hoku Hanohano Awards in the R&B category. “Chapters” was an impressive all original work, which featured tracks with Inna Vision and producer/rapper The Grouch.
Around the island, Rabbitt can be heard singing at the Monkeypod Kitchen in Kaanapali, Mahalo Aleworks in Makawao, and the Pilina lounge at the Fairmont Kea Lani, joined by Evan Hernandez on guitar. “R&B is my forte,” she says. At the Kea Lani, “I’m really fortunate that they’ve given me the opportunity to play that there. It’s a little bit of everything, but definitely more R&B chill lounge vibes. I do some originals and some current R&B, some old school classics like Fleetwood Mac and Dusty Springfield’s ‘Son of a Preacher Man.’ I really enjoy performing original music because I love storytelling.
“Lately I’ve been really inspired by R&B artists like Jazmine Sullivan, Snoh Aalegra, and Ari Lennox. I really love this band called Hiatus Kaiyote, kind of this R&B fusion. It’s so creative and just super unique, kind of the direction that I’m in right now, really R&B driven with mostly those artists.”
And as far as Saturday’s show, “it’s going to be so great,” she says. “A lot of the music will be identifiable songs that people know. We’ve got some classic ballads and there are some kind of more B-side songs that I’ve never heard before that I’m super excited to perform. It’s going to be fantastic.”
