MAPA Live! presents ‘Jekyll & Hyde’

Novelist Robert Louis Stevenson was awakened by his wife, Fanny, from a nightmare in September of 1885. He replied angrily, "Why did you wake me? I was dreaming a fine bogey tale." Years later, his stepson chronicled that "Louis came downstairs in a fever, read nearly half the book aloud, and then, while we were still gasping, he was away again, and busy writing. I doubt if the first draft took so long as three days.""The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" was published in 1886 and became an overnight sensation in both the United Kingdom and the United States. Youths dazzle in Maui shows

The apparent theme of youth theater this summer is raising the bar considerably. With Theatre Theatre Maui's "Shrek: The Musical Jr.," designer and technical director Annabehl Sinclair-Delaney appears to be the catalyst. From set design to scene painting, to costumes and props, "Shrek" is significantly more advanced stylistically than any previous TTM production. The Maui Academy of Performing Arts also follows suit with "The Little Mermaid," which not only outdistances its 2015 production of "Oliver," but also rivals every 2016 Maui musical with the highest production values. In TTM's ...

The moment Jerry Eiting as King Arthur pantomimes the classic "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" horse riding, followed by Ally Shore as Patsy mimicking the clopping of hooves with coconut shells, instant applause arose. Eiting and Shore are brilliant in their roles, delivering nonstop laughs that grow louder and longer throughout the show, but everyone gets a show-stopper in "Spamalot."Productions of this scale are only attempted on Maui once or twice a year for good reason. Maui OnStage's "Spamalot" requires countless scene changes, continuous video projections and more costume changes ...

Maui OnStage serving up ‘Spamalot’

In 2004, Eric Idle announced in a press release that Monty Python was coming to Broadway in the form of a new musical, stating, "Lovingly ripped off from the classic film comedy 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail,' 'Spamalot' retells the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, and features a bevy of beautiful show girls, not to mention cows, killer rabbits and French people."In the original press release, he also shared, "I like the title, 'Spamalot,' a lot. We tested it with audiences on my recent U.S. tour and they liked it as much as I did, which is gratifying. After ...
