FirstLight 2015 returns in November and December

An island tradition since its inaugural year in 1999, the Maui Film Festival's 17th annual FirstLight: Academy Screenings on Maui returns to simultaneously celebrate the holidays and many of the most award-worthy films of the year.Twenty films in all will be presented during the multiday screenings, with the first scheduled for Nov. 28 and 29. Maui premiere of ‘View From a Blue Moon’ this month

Maui Film Festival organizers will present the Maui premiere of the surf film "View From a Blue Moon" this month at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.The film has been called the "best surf film ever" by Surf magazine and follows one of the world's most dynamic surfers, John John Florence, and his closest friends from his home on the North Shore of Oahu to his favorite surfing destinations around the globe.The film will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 27 in Castle Theater. Tickets are $14. Maui Film Festival FirstLight FastPasses are not valid for this screening.

‘Mai Poina: The Trial of a Queen’

* Screening is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Maui Arts & Cultural Center's McCoy Studio Theater.Victoria Kneubuhl's courtroom drama reenacts Queen Liliuokalani's trial for treason. The play focuses on events in 1895, after Hawaiian nationalists failed to restore the queen to her throne and she was tried by an American court for allegedly allowing the uprising against the new republic by her followers.The play explores unresolved sovereignty issues triggered by the U.S. overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy.
