Applications for 117 affordable rental apartments for seniors at the new Liloa Hale housing complex in Kihei will open Nov. 16, with a deadline of Dec. 4 for consideration in the initial tenant selection process.
The three-story development at 1745 Liloa Drive is a joint project of Hale Mahaolu and Highridge Costa. The complex will feature 101 one-bedroom, one-bath apartments and 16 two-bedroom, one-bath apartments.
The development will also include private lanais, a multipurpose area, laundry facilities, a manager’s office, mailroom and on-site parking.
For one-bedroom apartments, rents will range from $683 to $1,516, while two-bedroom apartments range from $812 to $1,811, according to a project flyer listing rates as of Jan. 1, 2026. The apartments are designated for households earning 30% to 60% of the Area Median Income.
"There continues to be a tremendous need for quality, affordable senior housing on Maui," said Anders Lyons, executive director of Hale Mahaolu. "We are grateful for the collaboration of Highridge Costa and Hale Mahaolu helping bring Liloa Hale to our community."
The current target move-in date is Feb. 1.
The development was built on land purchased from neighboring Hope Chapel. Hale Mahaolu will manage the property and oversee tenant selection.
The initial selection process will recognize former residents of Hale Mahaolu’s Lahaina communities and people who lost their homes in the Kula and Lahaina wildfires. Those residents are encouraged to apply.
Applicants must meet the project’s age, income and other eligibility requirements, regardless of whether they qualify for a selection preference. The head of household or co-head must be at least 55 years old.
Applications will be available for pickup from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, Nov. 16 through Dec. 4, at the Hale Mahaolu Central Office, 200 Hina Ave. in Kahului.
Completed original applications must be received at the office by 3 p.m. Dec. 4 to be considered for initial tenant selection. Applications submitted by email or fax will not be accepted.
Qualified applications received after the deadline will be placed on the regular waiting list on a first-come, first-served basis.
Housing Choice Vouchers will be accepted at the development. Pets will be allowed under certain conditions, and smoking will not be permitted.
