Resident recognized by center for peace

Maui radio personality Cindy Paulos -- a music producer, author and poet -- has been named a 2020 Cross-Cultural & Peace Crafter Award Laureate by the

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization Center for Peace, the flagship member of the U.S. Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centers and Associations.

The award ceremony will take place virtually Monday during the commemoration of the 2020 International Day for Peace.

The Cross-Cultural & Peace Crafters event is hosted each year by UNESCO Center for Peace as a way of shining a spotlight and to honor artists, scientists and social justice activists from around the world.

"These individuals have contributed peace to a world in such dire need for peacemakers and social justice. They have significantly contributed, each in their own way, to make this world just a little better," said Guy Djoken, the executive director of UNESCO Center for Peace.

AAUW announces virtual meeting

Renewable energy production and use will be featured at the American Association of University Women's meeting Sept. 26 via Zoom. The social half-hour will start at 10 a.m., followed by a business meeting at 10:30 and the speaker.

Barry Solomon, professor emeritus of geography and environmental policy at Michigan Technological University, will discuss the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act, H.R. 763. He will explain how this bill, introduced in the U. S. House of Representatives on Jan. 24, 2019, would be a boon to renewable energy production and use in Hawaii. This bill includes an annual dividend refund to most American households.

Solomon will give an update on the status of a similar bill that passed one house of the Hawaii Legislature earlier in 2020 and the work of the Citizens Climate Lobby and its Maui chapter, a nonpartisan group that is fighting for these bills to address climate change.

For Zoom login information, contact Catherine Thompson at cathyt808@gmail.com or (808) 268-1232.
