Champion swimmer Fred Haywood will be the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Kahului's meeting from 12 to 1 p.m. Monday on Zoom.
Born the son of a sugar plantation doctor on Maui a decade before it became a state, Haywood left home at 17 to join George Haines' world-famous Santa Clara swim team. In 1967, he and Mark Spitz were the first high school students to win the National Championships in Dallas, Texas.
Haywood was a silver medalist at the 1967 Pan American Games and became a multiple NCAA and American record holder as well as the swim team captain at Stanford University.
He also broke the world speed record for windsurfing in Weymouth, England, in 1983.
At 40, Haywood gave up professional sports to raise a family and sell real estate on Maui.
At the meeting, he will share stories from his book "Racing with Aloha: An Inspiring Journey from Humble Barefoot Maui Boy to Champion in the Water."
