Maui High School seniors Cayleb Fernandez and Mari Yamamoto each were awarded a $20,000 scholarship from the Construction Industry of Maui last week to help the students pursue their college dreams.

Fernandez, who will attend the University of Arizona, and Yamamoto, who plans to attend Oregon State University, were presented the Bob Poulson Scholarship awards on May 18 at Cafe O'Lei at the Mill House.

The scholarship was created in Poulson's honor to perpetuate his spirit of helping others and has awarded nearly $140,000 over five years, according to a news release.

Recipients of the scholarship must graduate from a high school on Maui and be entering a two- or four-year degree program in construction, engineering, landscaping and/or other design fields.

Past recipients Emily Mitra and Connor Kong were also given $2,500 each at the banquet on May 18 as a gesture to help continue funding their educational pursuits.

The organization is a trade council of the Maui Chamber of Commerce and represents roughly 100 member companies.
