BHS wins ‘Expert’ category at ‘Olelo Youth Xchange

Baldwin High School bested 50 other schools and won the top prize in the Expert category at the 20th Annual 'Olelo Youth Xchange Student Video Competition Awards Gala last week.

Baldwin High School won the Expert category with the video "Family."

More than 500 students, educators and parents attended the "Keiki Oscars" at the Hawaii Convention Center on April 25, where the winning schools were announced.

The winners were selected from more than 600 videos submitted by students who attend public, charter and private schools statewide or are homeschooled. The winning Youth Xchange student videos were selected based on subject impact and technical production. The judging panels included local news media, filmmaking professionals and, in the case of sponsored categories, subject experts. This year, Youth Xchange videos competed in 13 categories. The five broad categories were mini-documentary, public service announcement, short, Junior Expert and Expert.

As the Expert category winner, Baldwin High School received a LiveU Solo Pro, which will allow students to create 4K-quality videos and on-the-go content from remote locations.

The 'Olelo Youth Xchange was launched in 2003 to give island keiki a voice to tell stories in a variety of video formats and about subjects that are meaningful to them. Since its inception, 'Olelo Youth Xchange has awarded nearly 650 video cameras to media-education programs in schools throughout Hawaii. For more information, visit www.olelo.org/YXC.
