Documentary to screen in Lahaina
"Finding Sandalwood Mountain," a documentary dedicated to the story of the Chinese migration to Hawaii, will be screened at this month's Movie at the Old Prison at 7 p.m. today.
Shot in Hawaii and China, the film chronicles the complete and unabridged history of the Chinese migrants who came to Hawaii. It features the lives of Chun Ah Fong, Sun Yat Sen and Hiram Fong.
Seating is on the lawn of the Old Lahaina Prison at the corner of Prison and Wainee streets. Attendees can bring their own blankets, mats and low-back beach chairs. Limited free parking is available at the county lot at the corner of Prison and Front streets.

Pride Month event set for June 2
Maui AIDS Foundation will host a Pride Month event at 7 p.m. on June 2, at Da Playground in Maalaea.
There will be drag performances, a costume contest, music by DJ Payfire Ono, prizes, free swag and community resources. Attendees must be 21 or older.

Bon dance set for June 3 in Lahaina.
Lahaina Shingon Mission Hokoji in Lahaina will hold a bon dance practice at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church grounds.
The church's bon dance will be on June 3 and will begin with a service at 6:30 p.m., with dance to follow at 7:30 p.m.
Food will be sold including nishime, chow fun, teri-beef bento, thai chicken curry bowl with rice, chili with rice, sushi, shaved ice and cold drinks.
There will also be a rummage and bazaar sale. The church is at 682 Luakini St.

St. Ann's Church to hold rummage sale
St. Ann's Church will hold a rummage sale from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church at 40 Kuhinia St. in Waihee.
Items sold include, office furniture, household items and clothing.
Proceeds will support the church upkeep and maintenance.

Volunteers sought for Haleakala service trip
The Friends of Haleakala National Park is seeking volunteers for a service activity at the park's plant nursery and museum in the Haleakala Summit District from 9 a.m. to noon on June 6.
Participants will help care for rare, endemic plants being propagated or help catalog and organize materials in the park's adjacent museum.
Participants should bring water, snacks and their own gloves if desired, the organization said. The park will provide tools.
Sturdy shoes are also recommended, as well as a hat and sunscreen in case of outplanting work.

Maui Ki-Aikido to teach self-defense
Maui Ki-Aikido will offer a two-hour self-defense workshop on June 2.
The public class will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Shunshinkan Dojo located on 194 S. Market St. in Wailuku. The class, which is open to adults and teens, will be taught by head instructor Tracy Reasoner.
The workshop will cover fundamentals of awareness and calmness in movement, as well as a few simple self-defense techniques, according to a news release.
There is a suggested donation of $10. Registration will begin at 6 p.m. at the dojo. Participants should wear comfortable loose clothing and slippers.

Four vie for Miss Maui Filipina title
The Maui Filipino Community Council will present the 62nd Miss Maui Filipina Scholarship Pageant at 7 p.m. on June 2, at the Binhi at Ani Filipino Community Center in Kahului.
This year's contestants are Kasey Cababat, Shyla-Tehara Moore, Johanne Paige Guevarra and Sandra Desierto.
The winner will receive a scholarship award, a trip to the Philippines and the opportunity to represent Maui in the Miss Hawaii Filipina Scholarship Pageant in July. The theme of the pageant is "A Crown in Your Heart."

MHLA awards 24 scholarships
The Maui Hotel & Lodging Association has awarded a total of $61,500 in scholarships to 24 local students.
Scholarships were awarded through the UH-Maui College hospitality and culinary arts programs, the Academy of Hospitality and Tourism program and the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association Member Program.
The six recipients from the UH-Maui College hospitality and culinary programs are Tricha Arquero, McKenna Lickle, Malorie Murakami, John Cudal, Zena Garcia and Rena Leeber.
Three students were awarded scholarships through the Academy of Hospitality and Tourism program, which supports students who have chosen to pursue a career path in Hawaii's visitor industry. The recipients are Triston Lewis, Deseree Soriano and Deanne Suehisa.
Fifteen scholarships were awarded through the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association Member Program. The recipients are Joanna Marie Acosta, Tiana Agres, Taylor Barroga, Deyna Buck, Juliana Beatrix Cruz, Kami Echiverri, Kailani Ibanez, Mary-Elsie Koka, Haylee Lundberg, Danica Mae Palacio, Jarred Peros, Gabriella Pinheiro, D'Marco Rabang, Kilinaheikealaula Robinson and Dylan Noah Sagon.
